Govt plans to boost export of leather and jute goods, besides apparel

Commerce minister Tipu Munshi said, export opportunities of Bangladeshi products in the international market are increasing. Apparel currently covers 83-84 per cent of our total export. We look forward to boost up the export of other items, including leather products, jute products, light, machineries, IT and pharmaceuticals and reach the billion-dollar mark within the next few years. 

The commerce minister said this while inaugurating the month-long International Trade Fair at Chattogram Outer Stadium organised by Chattogram Metropolitan Chamber on Monday.

Chattogram Metropolitan Chamber President Khalilur Rahman chaired the opening ceremony. Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Krishna Pad Roy, Dainik Azadi Editor MA Malek, The Purbokone Limited Chairman Jashim Uddin Chowdhury, Chattogram City Corporation Former Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, Fair Convener and Al Arafah Islami Bank Chairman Abu Samad Labu also spoke on the occasion.

Tipu Munshi in his speech said, our pharmaceutical products are being exported to 151 countries while ceramic products are gaining popularity. Terming the Chittagonian people as ‘Saudagar (trader)’ the commerce minister said, even today the lion’s share of our overall revenue comes from Chattogram.
