Wednesday (29 December) marks the first anniversary of docking a sea-going ship at the jetty of Matarbari Power Station in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar. In one year, goods were unloaded from 49 ships at the two jetties of the power plant. The two jetties of the power plant are located at the end of Matarbari deep sea terminal which is awaiting construction under Chittagong port.
On 29 December last year, the first sea-going ‘MV Venus Triumph’ was docked at the oil unloading jetty of Matarbari power plant. On 15 July, the first ship was unloaded at another coal unloading jetty under construction. The construction of this 300 metre long jetty was completed last November. So far, 56,582 tonnes of goods have been unloaded from 49 ships at the two jetties.
Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited is implementing a 1,200 MW ultra-supercritical coal power plant project along with two jetties at Matarbari. The first unit of the power plant is scheduled to become operational in January 2024. For the construction of the power plant, equipment including various steel structures is being imported from different countries.
The port is providing ancillary facilities for docking ships at the jetty of Matarbari Power Station. The Matarbari deep sea terminal will be constructed a short distance from the jetty of this power plant, which is within the water territory of the port. Construction of Matarbari deep seaport terminal under Chittagong port will be completed in 2025.
The construction of a 14 km long waterway at an average depth of 18 and a half metres is nearing completion at the jetty of the power plant at Matarbari and the port terminal awaiting construction. This average depth means that the waterway will have about 16 metres of water at low tide. It can be used to dock ships of a depth of 14 metres.
