Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed to build Metro Rail in Chattogram as well as Dhaka. She said that the Metro Rail route will be from Chattogram airport to the railway station. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday (4 January), the Prime Minister said that metro rails will be gradually built in other major cities besides Chattogram.
Planning Minister M A Mannan informed reporters about this after the ECNEC meeting. Quoting the Prime Minister, the minister said, ‘She has said that metro rail will be set up in other big cities as well. The Ministry of Planning will encourage any metro rail project brought to us.’
Speaking at a press conference at the NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka, the Planning Minister also said, ‘We often have to revise projects more than once. We blame the contractor and the public works department for this. But the consultants who designed it, are not held accountable. The Prime Minister has directed to bring them under accountability.’
State Minister for Planning Shamsul Alam said in a press conference that three mega projects will be inaugurated this year. Padma Bridge will be launched in June, Karnaphuli Tunnel in October, and Metro Rail (Route-6) in December. After the launch of the three projects, an additional 1.5 to 2% will be added to the GDP.
