There is plenty of opportunities for trade and investment expansion between Bangladesh and Japan

Faruque Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said there was ample scope for expanding trade and investment between Bangladesh and Japan for mutual benefit. He said, ‘Bangladesh wants to increase the share of readymade garments in the Japanese market.’

He made the remarks during a meeting with the Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki at the BGMEA office in Gulshan on Monday (10 January). BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim, Miran Ali, Director Asif Ashraf, and First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy Haruta Hiroki were present on the occasion.

During the meeting, they discussed possible ways to expand trade and deepen relations between the two countries. During the talks, they emphasised removing trade barriers. They expressed interest in initiating communication between Bangladeshi and Japanese businessmen, especially those involved in the fashion industry, to create business opportunities.

Faruque Hassan said, ‘Bangladesh wants to increase the share of readymade garments in the Japanese market.’ He sought the cooperation of the Ambassador in this regard. The BGMEA President requested the Ambassador to encourage Japanese businessmen to come forward in the potential investment sectors of Bangladesh, especially in the non-cotton textile sector.

The BGMEA President said, ‘Due to the growing demand in the global market, Bangladesh’s garments industry is increasing its focus on manufacturing garments with synthetic fibres.”

The Ambassador of Japan also discussed the increase of incentives for export to new markets for readymade garments factories located in the Export Processing Zone (EPZ). He also emphasised further facilitation of doing business in Bangladesh to attract more Japanese investment.
