Bangladesh Railway has taken an initiative to build a 26 kilometres railway line from Chakaria in Cox’s Bazar to Matarbari at a cost of around Tk 13,000 crore. If this project is implemented, containers can be directly transported from Matarbari Deep Sea Terminal to ICDs in Dhaka by rail. Bangladesh Railway has also completed the design work after the feasibility study of the project. This railway will also be connected with the Matarbari power station.
Md. Abidur Rahman, Director of construction survey project of the Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar double line dual gauge and Director (Engineering) of Bangladesh Railway said the feasibility study for the construction of 26 kilometres railway line from Chakaria to Matarbari has been completed. The design of the project has also been prepared.
He said that the project requires 450 acres of land. There are two big rivers and a few canals fall within the 26 kilometres. So 11 kilometres have to be elevated. Initially, the project cost was estimated at Tk 13,000 crore.
