The port authority has taken up the project of setting up rubber fenders at the jetty of Mongla port to expand the import-export trade and to protect foreign commercial ships. Rubber fenders will be installed at the port jetties 7, 8, and 9. The cost of the project has been estimated at Tk 8 crores 50 lacs and 71 thousand.
The port authority signed an agreement in their meeting room with Khulna Shipyard Limited on Sunday (23 January) morning to install a rubber fender. Acting Chairman of the authority Commodore Mohammad Abdul Wadud Tarafdar and Managing Director of Khulna Shipyard Commodore M Shamsul Aziz signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.
Khulna Shipyard Captain M Fida Hasan, Mongla Port Authority Chief Engineer Md. Shawkat Ali, Director (Traffic) Md. Mostafa Kamal, Chief Security Officer Lieutenant Commander Abdullah Al Mehdi, Acting Secretary of the Board and Public Relations Md. Makruzzaman were present at the time.
Commodore Mohammad Abdul Wadud Tarafdar, acting Chairman of the Mongla Port Authority, said that rubber fenders were installed at jetties 7, 8, and 9 of the port about 10 years ago, most of which have been damaged. Therefore, there is a risk of damage to foreign ships docking at the jetty. Earlier, wooden logs were used on the jetty, which would rot and fall off soon after installation due to being hit by ships. To solve all these problems, new rubber fenders are being installed instead of wooden logs. Once completed, foreign ships arriving at Mongla port will be able to dock safely at the jetty.
