Two high capacity 5000 bhp / 70-tonne bollard pool capacity tugboats are being bought at a cost of Tk 145 crores 22 lacs and 56 thousand. Handling of ships and cargo is increasing at Chittagong port and the two new tugboats will assist foreign ships involved in import-export work with berthing, unberthing, and shifting. The two tugboats will be added to the port’s fleet next June.
The signing ceremony was held at the Chittagong port meeting room on Monday (14 March). Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, local representative of Cheoy Lee Limited, and Chairman of e-Engineering Limited Tarafdar Md. Ruhul Amin, Chief Executive Officer Major (Retd.) Md. Serajus Salekin, Executive Director Md. Mahibullah Morshed, member of the Chittagong Port Authority (Finance) Md. Kamrul Amin, member (Harbour and Marine) Commodore Md. Mostafizur Rahman, member (Engineering) Capt. Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, Deputy Conservator Capt. Md. Faridul Alam, Secretary Md. Omar Farooq, Harbour Master Captain Md. Zahirul Islam, Dock Master Captain Md. Abu Sufian, Chief Finance, and Accounting Officer Md. Rafiqul Alam, Law Officer Muntasir Ahmed, and Project Director Captain Md. Mostahidul Islam were present at the occasion.
Through this project, safe berthing, unberthing assistance for large merchant ships will be provided, support for operational work of newly implemented Bay Terminal and Matarbari Terminal in Maheshkhali-Kutubdia area, enhanced safety assistance for ships arriving at Chittagong port, conducting rescue operations in outer anchorage and sea areas, providing fire fighting assistance in large commercial ships, assisting in anti-pollution activities for rivers and the environment, providing assistance to commercial vessels in adverse weather conditions, conservation of Karnaphuli Channel will be expedited.
