BGMEA calls for publishing factual news to protect the image of readymade garments industry

The garments industry is a delicate industry inhabited by labour. For this reason, from the point of view of responsible journalism, the Director of BGMEA Md. Mohiuddin Rubel requested to publish a report on the garment sector. He made the call in a press release sent to the media on Tuesday (12 April).

Mohiuddin Rubel noted, ‘Information that can create any confusion about labour can have a negative impact on the industry. Especially at the local and international level, it can tarnish the image of the industry, which is not at all desired. Therefore, in the interest of publishing objective and factual news about the garments industry, we are always ready to assist you with all the information available to us before publishing the report so that the industry is not harmed and a fair environment for production is maintained.’

He said, ‘Garments industry is a national resource. BGMEA sincerely seeks everyone’s cooperation in the development of this industry.’

According to the press release, the garment industry has become an industry worth 35.81 billion dollars (according to 2021 figures). The garments industry, the largest employer in the private sector, has directly provided employment to 40 lac workers. Indirectly, the livelihood of about 5 crore people in the country depends on this industry. The contribution of this industry to the GDP is about 11%. Today the whole economy revolves around the garments industry; various industries including banks, insurance, ports, hotels, tourism, backward linkages, and subsidiary industries have developed.

We gratefully remember the strong role of fellow journalists in this industry reaching this stage. On the one hand, you have brightened the image of the industry locally and internationally, on the other hand, you have helped to advance the industry by providing advice in various fields. Therefore, we sincerely believe that BGMEA and the media are not two separate families; rather, it is one family. And one of the main goals of this family is to continue the development of the country; at the same time, to uplift the image of the sectors that are contributing to the economy of the country.

Mohiuddin Rubel further said, ‘We have continued our efforts to manage the industry with the highest standards of ethics and responsibility. At the same time, we hope that all of you who report on this industry will report from a perspective of responsible journalism.’
