The import of luxury goods will be controlled in the next fiscal year

Minister of Finance AHM Mustafa Kamal has said that in the next 2022-23 fiscal year, the import of luxury goods will be controlled in both public and private sectors. He was speaking at a virtual press conference after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement on Wednesday (20 April).

The Minister of Finance said, ‘Import of luxury goods will be controlled as internal weaknesses exist. These products will be allowed to be imported when there is no additional vulnerability or danger in the international market.’

Mentioning that the government always takes steps to control imports, Mustafa Kamal said, ‘Imports must be controlled. It is not free. The government does not control the imported goods which are necessary for our industries and which are essential commodities.’

When asked whether the central bank has taken steps to control imports, the Minister of Finance said that there are many types of imported products. One is directly related to the project. This is permitted. If imports are not consumer goods or revenue is not high, there is an attempt to exclude them. Meanwhile, the country’s exports have increased a lot. Although it will not be able to surpass imports.
