Apart from energy, Bangladesh also wants US investment in ICT and maritime economy sectors

Foreign Minister and business leaders exchange views with the US delegation of businessmen

Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen said that Bangladesh expects US investment in various sectors besides the US energy sector. Currently, there is only US investment in the energy sector, which is about 90%. We need more investment in the energy sector, especially in the renewable energy sector. Because Bangladesh is still lagging in this sector.

The Foreign Minister was speaking at a press conference after a meeting with a 27-member US business delegation from the US-Bangladesh Business Council at the Foreign Service Academy on Monday (9 May).

Describing Bangladesh as a ‘rising sun’, Momen said that Bangladesh now has many opportunities in various sectors like ICT, renewable energy, and maritime economy.

Mentioning the United States’ annual investment of five trillion dollars Dr. Momen hopes for more investment here. At present Bangladesh is getting a small amount from this huge investment.

The delegation included US business leaders from a variety of sectors, including energy, financial services, insurance, and agriculture. They will stay in Bangladesh till 11 May.
The delegation is led by Jay R Pryor, Vice President (Business Development) of Chevron.

Responding to a question on the return of the US Generalised System of Preference (GSP) facility for Bangladesh, the Foreign Minister said, ‘We have now graduated from Least Developed Countries (LDCs). We rather want to reduce GSP benefits for other countries that are competitors of Bangladesh. Bangladesh has been excluded from the US Generalised System of Preference (GSP) since 2015.
