The much-awaited Padma Bridge will be opened for traffic on June 25. On that day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Padma Multipurpose Bridge at 10 am. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told reporters this in front of Ganobhaban on Tuesday (24 May).
Earlier, Obaidul Quader went to Ganobhaban at noon to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to discuss the inauguration and naming of Padma Bridge. He came out of Ganobhaban and announced the date of the inauguration of Padma Bridge to the journalists.
At that time, Obaidul Quader said, ‘The much-awaited Padma Bridge – everyone is interested to know when it will be inaugurated. I am giving you the good news. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu, will announce the inauguration of Padma Bridge on 25 June (Saturday) at 10 am.’
He said, ‘We have given two summaries of the Padma Bridge to the Prime Minister. She signed one of the summaries of the inauguration of Padma Bridge with the date 25 June. The other was to name the Padma Bridge ‘Sheikh Hasina Bridge’. She did not sign it. She (Prime Minister) said, “The Padma Bridge will be named after the river Padma. I will not name it after anyone else. Neither will it be named after anyone in Bangabandhu’s family.”’
Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the work of the 6.15 km long bridge on the Padma River at her own expense at a cost of Tk 30 thousand crores in December 2015.
