The fire at the BM container depot at Sitakunda in Chattogram was extinguished after 86 hours. Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Islam, commander of the 18th Brigade of the 24th Infantry Division of the Army, told the media on Wednesday (8 June) at noon.
He said ‘The fire was completely extinguished around noon. There is still smoke coming from some containers, but the fire is no longer burning. A few sheds and many containers were burnt and damaged. They are being moved by cranes. It cannot be said at this moment if there is anything else under this debris.’
Earlier in the morning, the fire service informed that two units of the fire service were working to put out the fire. Although smoke is still coming out of the containers.
It must be mentioned that a fire broke out in the BM container depot at around 10 pm on 4 June. A container caught fire at night, concerned individuals said. Later, when it exploded, the fire spread. At least 44 people, including nine firefighters, were killed in the accident. More than 200 people, including fire service, police, depot officials, and employees, were injured. They have been admitted to different hospitals.
