Due to the rise in fuel prices, private container depots have started increasing the charges for various services. Initially, as part of this, handling charges for containers carrying imported goods have been increased by 34%. BICDA, the association of private container depot owners, said that this new fee came into effect on Thursday (11 August).
According to the new decision, the service charge for handling a 20-feet long import cargo container will be increased from Tk 9,754 to Tk 13,080. On the other hand, the fee for the handling of 40 feet-long import cargo container will be increased from Tk 11,255 to Tk 15,107.
BICDA Secretary General Md. Ruhul Amin Sikder said, ‘Among the various services provided by the depots, only the fees for services which use diesel-powered vehicles and container transport equipment have been increased.’
To begin with, it has been decided to increase the fees in the case of handling of containers carrying imported goods only, he said, ‘The fees of the other 4 services that use diesel will be discussed later and a decision will be made.’
