State Minister for Planning Shamsul Alam has commented that despite the challenge of inflation, the country’s economy is moving in the right direction so far. He said, ‘The current situation of the country is not a crisis, rather a discomfort. We are progressing well in spite of this uncomfortable environment.’

State Minister for Planning Shamsul Alam said these things in a seminar organised by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) on Sunday (14 August) about the overall situation of the country’s economy. DCCI President Rizwan Rahman presented the keynote address at the seminar.

In the seminar, State Minister Shamsul Alam said, ‘Many are saying that we have to go to the IMF for a bailout. We are going to become like Sri Lanka. Internationally, some are warning Bangladesh in various ways. As the elections are approaching, a joint domestic-foreign effort is underway. There’s no chance of stepping into the trap. We want to make it clear that the country’s economy has not slipped yet.’

The seminar was also attended by the former president of FBCCI, the top organisation of businessmen, Md. Shafiul Islam, Chief Economist of Bangladesh Bank, Md. Habibur Rahman, Executive President of BKMEA, Association of Knitwear Industry Owners, Mohammad Hatem, Senior Vice President of Dhaka Chamber, Manowar Hossain.

The State Minister considers inflation a major challenge for the country. He said, ‘We are in a comfortable state economically, that’s true. But we are very alarmed about inflation, which is also true. We are very concerned, that is why the government is giving food at low cost through TCB.’
