Scanners will be installed at every gate of Chittagong port to ease export-import activities, said State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday.
Terming Chittagong port as the lifeline of the country’s economy, Khalid said, the scanners are being installed for a flawless security system. The scanner installation work is also underway at all land ports, including Mongla, he said while visiting the new mooring container terminal at Chittagong port.
A group is conspiring against installing scanners at the port gates so that government’s digital Bangladesh dream does not come true, he noted.
The state minister said the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is doing everything to transform Chittagong port into a digital hub of business. The port is being further upgraded. Patenga Container Terminal and Overflow Yard have been constructed.
Chittagong port is ready to handle the pressure of more ships, he added.
Besides, according to the agreement with India, Indian ships can use Chittagong port and from there goods can be transported to north-eastern states of India by road, said Chowdhury.
The trial runs of Indian ships are being conducted at the port and more will follow, he added.
Indian ships will start using this port regularly after the ‘Statutory Regulatory Order’ from the National Board of Revenue (NRB), he added.
Chairman of Chittagong port Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, Member (Administration and Planning) Zafar Alam, and Member (Engineering) Captain Md. Mahbubur Rahman, among others, accompanied him.
