Multipurpose Bay Terminal of Chittagong Port will be constructed prioritizing future demand of the ever-increasing Exim trade, offering modern facilities and better communication keeping on par with the country’s economy.
At an exchange of views with various stakeholders of the port on the draft master plan for the construction of the terminal prepared by the Korean consultant Kunhwa DY JV on Wednesday, CPA Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said this besides hoping to complete the work by the end of 2025.
The stakeholders and port users expressed their individual views about the draft masterplan at the meeting that was held at Shahid Mohammad Fazlur Rahman Munshi Auditorium of the port on Wednesday (21 September).
CPA Chairman also noted that Bay Terminal with its modern facilities has been designed to meet the future demand while capacity building works for the port are already underway in order to expedite its usual 13 per cent growth. Once implemented, the Bay Terminal would enhance the port’s container storage capacity three times to 1.5 lakh twenty-foot equivalent units.
Representatives of the Chattogram City Corporation, Chattogram Development Authority, Chattogram Wasa, Water Development Board, Roads and Highways Department, CMP Traffic, Bangladesh Railway, Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Freight Forwarders Association, BIWTC, C&F Agent Association and Shipping Agent Association gave their opinions at the meeting.
The port chairman said a separate road will be constructed for the transportation of goods from the Bay Terminal, so that, no kind of traffic is created on the outer ring road. The port will also construct a boat yard at Rashmoni Ghat so that there is no impact on the livelihood of fishermen.
Three terminals will be constructed under the Bay Terminal project. One of these will be built with the funding of Chittagong port.
Member (Admin and Planning) Md. Zafar Alam, Member (Finance) Md. Kamrul Amin, Member (Harbour and Marine) Commodore Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, Member (Engineering) Commodore Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, Kunhwa-DY Team Leader Park Jong Jin and Port Planner Kim including senior officials of the port attended the meeting.
