The country’s oldest trade organization Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) believes that the country’s overall economic situation is fairly satisfactory. Ex[prt trade is also good. The lack of balance in international transactions has not yet posed a major risk. However, at the moment MCCI is seeing at least three major challenges in the country’s economy. These are– maintaining political stability, geopolitics and environmental compliance.
On Saturday, in an exchange of views with journalists, the president made this observation on behalf of the organization. Saiful Islam Habibullah N Karim, Director Abedin Hossain Khan and Secretary General Farooq Hasan answered various questions of the journalists on this occasion at the MCCI Auditorium in Motijheel of the capital.
MCCI president said political instability hurts business. Every time before election the political situation is unstable. He expressed hope that the politicians will be more responsible to keep the situation stable in view of the upcoming elections.
Explaining the geopolitical challenges, the MCCI president said that the Russia-Ukraine war broke out before the Corona situation ended. Taiwan-China tension is getting critical again. The United States has announced that it will take Taiwan’s side if war breaks out between the two countries. Along with internal politics, there is a kind of uncertainty in the economy due to this geopolitics. This may reduce exports. There may be a negative impact on industrial production and employment and overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Saiful Islam said, there is concern about global warming worldwide. Although Bangladesh is hardly responsible for this. Still, it is important for environmentally friendly production systems. If the environment is not right, growth will be hampered.
