A new office of the US Commercial Service has been opened in Bangladesh today to facilitate trade services between the two countries.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and Arun Venkataraman, assistant secretary of Commerce for Global Markets and Director General of the US and Foreign Commercial Service, inaugurated the new office at an event at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka.
Peter Huss, the US ambassador in Bangladesh was also present there.
On the same occasion, the commerce minister Tipu Munshi also inaugurated the three-day long US Trade Show organised by American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AMCHEM).
Tipu Munshi said the US is our principal export market. Apparel export to the US has reached USD 10 billion while import has surpassed USD 2 billion. The commercial service office of the US will create new possibilities in the trade sector of the two countries, he hoped.
Addressing the event, Venkataraman said that the trade relation between the two countries has crossed 50 years and the opening up of the commercial service office indicates the growing importance of Bangladesh as a trade partner of America.
A team of US business representatives led by Arun Venkataraman called on the commerce minister before the inauguration of the trade show.
A Trade and Investment Cooperation Forum Agreement (TICFA) meeting between the two countries will be held very soon where the cotton and GSP issues will be discussed.
