5.36% Growth in Container Handling at Chittagong Port

Chittagong Port reported a 5.36% increase in container handling for the fiscal year 2023-2024, managing 3.169 million TEU containers compared to 3.307 million in the previous fiscal year. Cargo handling also saw a 4.18% rise, reaching a record 12.32 million tonnes, up from 11.83 million tonnes last year.

Port authorities attribute this growth to the increased foreign trade of Bangladesh despite the Russia-Ukraine war. Nearly all industries, except for cement and ceramics, import commercial goods, machinery, chemical products, and raw materials through containers.

In FY 2022-2023, the port experienced a decline in container handling but handled a record 3.255 million containers in FY 2021-2022, with growth rates ranging from 5% to 11%. Container traffic growth was 3.1% in 2020-2021, 2.92% in 2019-2020, and 3.9% in 2018-2019. The total container transport volumes were 3.097 million in 2020-2021, 3.004 million in 2019-2020, and 2.919 million in 2018-2019.
