Bangladesh set a new record in the export of goods during the COVID-19 pandemic. In September, the country’s entrepreneurs exported products worth a total of 417 crore dollars or 35 thousand 445 crore taka. This amount has not been exported in any other month in the past. In July last year, the highest exports were worth 391 crore dollars.
The readymade garments sector has played a big role in setting new records in the export of goods. Last month, the sector exported goods worth 342 crore dollars or 29 thousand 70 crore taka, which is 41.66% more than the same period last year. Leaders of BGMEA and BKMEA, two garment owners’ organizations, said this was the highest monthly export in the history of the garment sector.
As a result of the record amount of exports last month, in the first quarter of July-September of the current 2021-22 fiscal year, the total export of goods was worth 1 thousand 102 crore dollars This income is 11.37% more than the same period of the previous fiscal year 2020-21. The target for export earnings this year has been set at 4 thousand 350 crore dollars. In the last fiscal year, the export of goods was 3 thousand 876 crore dollars.
In the first three months of the current fiscal year, 82% of the total export revenue came from the garments sector. During this period, garments worth 905 crore dollars were exported, which is 11.5% more than 813 crore dollars during the same period last year.
In the three months under review, knit garments worth 516 crore dollars were exported. This income is 15.69% more than the same period last year. On the other hand, woven garments worth 390 crore dollars have been exported during the period under review. In this case the growth is 6.39%. The United States and European Union (EU) countries have returned to normal with a large number of people being vaccinated against COVID-19. So the buyers in those countries are placing orders for the coming summer and spring season the same way they did before COVID-19. Apart from this, some purchases were shifted to Bangladesh due to the military rule in Myanmar and the terrible COVID-19 situation in India.
