Up to 35% of export goods are stolen on the road

On the way to Chittagong port for export, 30 to 35% of the goods of different companies are stolen. The members of the ring, which is made up mainly of drivers, unscrupulous buyers, and C&F business people, are responsible for the theft. The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) said this at a press conference on Sunday (19 December) in connection with the arrest of five members of such a ring.

Speaking at a press conference at the DMP’s media center at noon, DB Additional Commissioner AKM Hafiz Akhter said that a ring stole from the export goods before they reached the port. These stolen garments were later shipped to markets in Africa and Nepal. Besides, some were also sold in the country’s market. Those involved in this ring were some of the drivers, unscrupulous buyers, and C&F business people.

According to the press conference, a company called Apparels Limited (Envoy Group) was sending goods from Dhaka to Chattogram in a covered van for the export of readymade garments. They sent 53,000 garments to Chattogram in a covered van. But 8 thousand 53 pairs of men’s jeans worth Tk 60 lacs were stolen from the covered van. A case of the incident was filed in DMP’s Uttara west police station. As soon as the case was investigated, the issues of these rings came to light. Additionally, five people involved in the theft were arrested.

Hafiz Akhter said that the arrested persons had stolen the export-oriented garments from the cartons of the covered van on their way from Dhaka to Chittagong port. They then put the cartons back to their original positions and the driver drove the car to its designated destination. This organized ring of thieves steals goods from cartons in multiple covered vans carrying export-oriented garment goods with the assistance of the driver and the owner of the vehicle.
