Foreign Minister Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen has invited more Japanese investment in Bangladesh. Dr. Momen made this call in a bilateral meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi in Tokyo on Monday (11 April) at the Japanese Foreign Ministry. The meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere for about an hour. This was their first official meeting since Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi took office in November 2021. News from BSS.
The meeting was held on 10 February this year as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two friendly countries. The Foreign Minister hoped to work closely with the Japanese Foreign Minister to advance excellent bilateral relations.
Mentioning Japan’s name as very dear to the people of Bangladesh and Japan as the largest bilateral development partner, Foreign Minister Momen called for more Japanese investment in Bangladesh. He also mentioned the immense opportunities for investment in emerging sectors like Blue Economy, automobiles, ICT, pharmaceuticals, engineering, electronics, etc.
The Japanese Foreign Minister said that with the economic progress of Bangladesh, more Japanese companies will be attracted to invest in Bangladesh and expressed interest in further cooperation in the fields of Blue Economy, ICT, and pharmaceuticals to advance bilateral economic relations. He urged the young people of Bangladesh to learn faster and work harder and asked the Japanese government to provide more scholarships and skills development training.
The two Foreign Ministers also discussed important contemporary regional and international issues. Bangladesh highlighted the Rohingya issue and the steps taken so far, including the voluntary relocation of 30,000 Rohingya to Bhashan Char. The Foreign Minister thanked Japan for its unwavering commitment to resolving the issue as well as the constant assistance provided to Bangladesh so far. He sought more involvement from Japan in resolving the issue expeditiously.
The foreign ministers of the two countries also discussed the issue of climate change and its impact on risky countries like Bangladesh. They have agreed to work together on global issues. Foreign Minister Momen sought Japan’s assistance in setting up a Regional Adaptation Centre in Bangladesh. The two foreign ministers also discussed future candidacies in various multilateral forums and reiterated their support for each other’s candidates.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Tokyo Shahabuddin Ahmed, Deputy Chief of Mission Shah Asif Rahman, and Director (Foreign Minister’s Office) Md. Emdadul Islam Chowdhury took part in the meeting with the Foreign Minister.
Foreign Minister Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen stopped in Tokyo on his way to attend the Oceanography Conference in Palau on 11-15 April.
