The Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) is being piloted on 21 July with the docking of an open cargo ship. The product unloading activities are expected to be officially launched in September if the trial run is successful. If this terminal is fully operational, it will be possible to move 20% more goods.
Chittagong Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan visited the newly constructed terminal on Sunday (17 July). At this time he was informed about the latest preparations for docking the ship. Senior officials of the port were present during the visit.
The total length of the three jetties at PCT is 600 metres. Additionally, there is a dolphin jetty, which is 220 metres long. Each of the jetties is 200 meters in length. PCT will also have an added advantage due to locational reasons. It will be possible to accommodate larger ships here compared to the 18 main jetties of the port. A ship has to travel 14 kilometres from the outer anchorage to reach the main jetty; PCT can be reached by crossing 6 kilometres. Ships can dock at the PCT in less time than at the main jetty.
