The workers of passenger vessels and cargo vessels withdrew their strikes on the country’s river routes on Monday evening, nearly two days after enforcing it to press home their 10-point demand, including a minimum wage of Tk 20,000.
Bangladesh Water Transport Workers’ Federation president Shah Alam announced the withdrawal of the strike after a meeting with the state minister for labour and employment Begum Monnujan Sufian.
The state minister said a 29-member committee — which was earlier formed by the labour department — would formulate proposals for a new wage structure within a month.
In addition, the owners of the vessels will pay Tk 1,200 to 1,500 to workers in addition to their existing wage as an interim solution till the formation of the new wage structure.
Following the withdrawal of the work abstention, the unloading of imported bulk cargoes from bigger vessels at the outer anchorage of the Chattogram port and transportation of these goods across the country resumed.
