Coast Guard clean-up operation after oil spill on Meghna

Bangladesh coast guard has launched a clean-up operation after a commercial tanker sank and ended up spilling oil following a collision with another vessel near the southern district of Bhola on Sunday. (December 25).

Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Coastguard Headquarter Lt Commander Abdur Rahman said, the oil tanker Sagor Nandini-2 of Padma Oil was underway in the Meghna River from Chittagong towards Chandpur carrying 0.9 million litres of diesel and 0.234 million litres of octane when it collided with the unidentified vessel in dense fog in the early morning hours.

The impact left a breach on the tanker’s hull just above the waterline, causing the ship to sink shortly afterwards, he noted.

However, all 13 crewmembers were safely rescued by the coastguard along with the Samaritan boats that sailed to the area to render assistance. The Bangladesh Coast Guard immediately launched an oil clean-up operation and an estimated 189,000 litres was successfully collected till the following day.
