Bangladesh is once again surpassing India in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast, Bangladesh’s per capita GDP at current rates in 2021 will be 2 thousand and 138.794 dollars. At the same time, India’s per capita GDP will be 2 thousand and 116.444 dollars. As a result, Bangladesh has surpassed India for two consecutive years.
The IMF released the World Economic Outlook (WEO) on 12 October. There, the agency says, both Bangladesh and India will achieve great growth after overcoming the effects of COVID-19. Of this, India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth will be higher, 9.5%, and Bangladesh’s growth will be 4.6%. Despite India’s growth, India’s economy contracted sharply last year. That is why Bangladesh has the opportunity to move forward again.
Exactly one year ago, the IMF, as it did this year, stated that in 2020, the growth of Bangladesh will be 3.8%, and the growth of India will be negative, that is, (-) 10.3%. As a result, the per capita GDP of Bangladesh in 2020 will be 1 thousand 888 dollars and India’s GDP will be 1 thousand 887 dollars. Last time Bangladesh was just ahead by 1 dollar.
