Chittagong port is handling a record number of export cargo containers

Chittagong Port Authority has set a record for the handling of export cargo containers. In October, container handling of exported goods was 72 thousand and 642 units, which holds the record for the highest amount of handling in a single month so far.

This record has been made possible by the return of momentum in the export trade based on the country’s garment sector. The Chittagong Port Authority has provided maximum service in shipping the exported goods at the right time. Other products exported include frozen food, agro-processed products, jute and jute products, plastic products, leather and leather products, home textiles, engineering and chemical products.

In the first four months of the current fiscal year (2021-22) (July-October) 2 lacs 81 thousand and 927 units of export-goods carrying cargo were handled. The highest was in October, at 72 thousand and 642 units. Besides, 70 thousand 786 units of export containers were handled in July, 67 thousand and 40 units in August and 71 thousand and 459 units in September.

According to the updated statistics of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), goods worth Tk 40 thousand and 592 crore were exported from Bangladesh last month. It is the highest in the history of the country for exports made in a month.

According to the EPB, about 80-85% of the country’s total exports come from the readymade garments sector. In the four months of the current fiscal year (July-October), readymade garments worth 1 thousand 262 crore dollars or Taka 1 lac 8 thousand and 532 crore were exported. This income is 22.62% more than the same period last year. Besides, the export of processed food was worth 46 crore dollars, home textiles worth 41 crore dollars, leather and leather products worth 36 crore dollars, jute and jute products worth 33 crore dollars.
