The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is going to launch an automated process from next month, which will make the task of releasing goods through automation faster, easier and cheaper for importers. This clearance, called ‘Electronic Delivery Order’, is one of the many documents used in the import process by shipping agents or freight forwarding agents. This clearance process is being digitised.
Shipping agents and people involved in freight forwarding give these clearances to importers so that they can release the consignment from the port. Under the current procedure, business owners have to physically visit the office of the shipping agent or freight forwarding company to receive the Delivery Order (DO). This wastes several working hours, which affects the delivery time. Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) agents do this on behalf of importers. In many cases, due to the shipping agents’ offices being closed in the evening, it is not possible to collect the DO in one day.
From 1 December, six top shipping lines will start issuing ‘Electronic Delivery Order’ on a trial basis. On 22 November, CPA contacted 6 major shipping agents. The companies are APL Bangladesh Private Limited, Maersk Bangladesh Limited, Continental Traders Bangladesh Limited, Ocean International Limited and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company Bangladesh Limited.
