The World Bank has praised the steps taken by the Bangladesh government to control the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, the organization is focusing on an inclusive economic recovery. This information was given by the Dhaka office of the World Bank in a press release on Friday (10 December).
World Bank South Asia Vice President Hartwig Schafer is on a week-long visit to Bangladesh. During the visit, he reiterated their commitment to recovering from the pandemic, the statement said. He also mentioned the strong role played by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the recent climate conference.
Schafer said, ‘The continuity of Bangladesh’s economic development is notable. Although the pandemic has affected Bangladesh, the economy has now turned around as a result of the active action of the government. The World Bank is committed to supporting Bangladesh’s continued growth. For this, government, private and business situations should be kept in a strong position. As a result, timely policy measures will be required to build a skilled workforce.’
According to the organization, the World Bank Group is preparing a new Country Partnership Framework for Bangladesh, which will provide guidance for assistance from 2023 to 2027. This will include a strong consultation process with a wide range of stakeholders, including the government, the private sector and civil society, and development partners.
In a meeting with the government and other stakeholders, Schafer discussed Bangladesh’s development priorities and how the World Bank can support them in a sustainable way. He further said, ‘Bangladesh has written an inspiring success story in development. As the country prepares to become an upper-middle-income country by 2031, the World Bank will provide support on every step on the path to economic growth. It will be encourage development and inclusivity for the people of Bangladesh.’
