The Power Division has been nominated for the Independence Award-2022 for the successful completion of 100% electrification of the country on Mijib Barsha and socio-economic development. The award will be handed over to the winning organisation on Thursday. On this day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be present by a video conference from Ganobhaban.
Mir Mohammad Aslam Uddin, Deputy Chief Information Officer of Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, confirmed the matter on Wednesday (23 March) afternoon.
On the centenary of Mujib’s birth and the golden jubilee of independence, 100% electrification has been ensured in the country. Remote ‘chars’, isolated islands, and remote hilly areas have been illuminated by light. Following this, electricity has also reached the remote ‘char’ Rangabali, an island isolated from the mainland of Patuakhali, by submarine cable through the river bed. Thus, all the people of the country have already come under the facility of electricity.
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the country’s largest 1320 MW Payra thermal power centre at Patuakhali.
A century ago, the country’s electricity capacity was only 5,000 MW. At present, it has increased five times to 25,000 MW. Per capita, electricity consumption has increased to 560 kWh per hour. System loss of electricity has come down from 15% to 8%.
