Export of goods to India through the Akhaura land port of Brahmanbaria is being hampered due to continuous rains and landslides. On Saturday (18 June), only five vehicles carrying fish and gas entered the Agartala land port. However, at least 20 trucks carrying export goods could not enter Agartala and are stuck at the land port. These include trucks loaded with rods, cement, and cotton.
However, even though the trucks are kept in the truck yard of the port, there is a risk that the goods will get wet and spoiled as there is no shed.
Besides, the offices of traders near the port have become submerged. During normal times 40-50 trucks of goods are exported to India every day.
Akhaura land port inspector (traffic) said Md. Zakir Hossain said that roads near the port were being submerged due to rains and landslides. I have heard that the condition on the other side is also bad.
It is to be noted that at present, various goods worth USD 2.5 to 3 lacs are exported through Akhaura land port every day.
