Initiative to export goods of containers unharmed in the BM depot explosion

An initiative has been taken to expedite the export of goods from 390 containers that were not damaged in the BM container depot explosion at Sitakunda in Chattogram. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has taken this initiative in coordination with the concerned departments including the National Board of Revenue. On 30 June a letter signed by Md. Faizur Rahman, Secretary-General of BGMEA, was sent to all the members of the association.

The letter said that the awful explosion at the BM container depot damaged a large consignment of export goods from the garments industry. An initiative was taken with the concerned departments including the National Board of Revenue for the export of BGMEA members’ exportable goods. The Board of Directors of BGMEA held an urgent meeting with the Commissioner of Chittagong Customs House, for the prompt shipping of intact export consignments. Following this, a list of intact exportable containers collected from BM Container Depot has been compiled.

The letter further said that the listed companies have been asked to apply to the concerned depot deputy commissioner for immediate shipping of intact containers of exportable consignments. Besides, it has been requested to contact the Additional Secretary (Customs and Ports) of BGMEA Chattogram Regional Office Mohammad Abdul Aziz Chowdhury in case of any problem in the export of goods.

On 4 June, a horrific fire and explosion occurred at the private BM container depot in Sitakunda, Chattogram. It killed 49 people, including 10 members of the fire service.
