Proposal to launch fourth inter-country train between Bangladesh and India

There are currently three inter-country trains running between Bangladesh and India. These are Maitri Express between Dhaka-Kolkata, Bandhan Express between Khulna-Kolkata, and Mitali Express between Dhaka-Siliguri.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami has proposed to run another inter-country train between the two countries. On Monday (18 July), he offered to run this train during a courtesy call with Minister of Railways Nurul Islam Sujan. In that case, the possible route of Bangladesh-India’s fourth inter-country train could be from Dhaka to Kolkata via Darshana.

The Indian High Commissioner said that considering the passenger demand, one more train can be launched between Dhaka and Kolkata via Darshana. In the discussion, the Minister of Railways stressed increasing connectivity with Nepal and Bhutan. In that case, he said to emphasise strengthening the Chilahati-Haldibari route.

The Minister of Railways discussed with Vikram Doraiswami various projects of Bangladesh Railway under implementation with Indian funding. Expressing interest in importing high-quality tourist coaches to run from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar, he said, Bangladesh Railway wants to buy coaches as well as engines and luggage vans under the line of credit.
