A delegation of the US Coast Guard is coming to Bangladesh on a three-day visit to inspect the security system of Chittagong port and its support facilities. The team will inspect the security system of these facilities under the ‘International Port Security Program’ of the United States. If the delegation has any observations for the implementation of security measures, they will present those.

The team will visit the establishments of some institutions including the Chittagong port and container depot on Monday and Tuesday

The International Port Security Program examines the security of ports and their support facilities in countries from which the United States imports goods. In this regard, they prioritized the implementation of the ISPS Code (Ship and Port Facility Security Risk Management Program) related to the security system of the International Maritime Organization.

The ISPS code is under the convention Safety of Life at Sea or SOLAS, which deals with the safety of the lives of sailors at sea. From 1 July 2004, the implementation of this code started in Bangladesh as well.

It should be noted that the US Coast Guard delegation visits the port and the port’s support facilities every two years. The last official visit in 2019 highlighted several observations.
