Lighter vessel workers called off their strike after 14 hours following assurances that their demands would be met.
Leaders of Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union announced withdrawal of the strike this evening after a 3-hour long fruitful meeting with Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Chairman M Shahjahan at CPA conference room of Bandarbhaban.
Workers decided to withdraw the strike as the port chairman assured them of meeting their prime demand of cancelling the lease of Charpara jetty to a firm.
The workers under the banner ‘Sorbostorer Noujan Sramikbrindo’ from a rally at Banglabazar in the city on Thursday afternoon announced the strike to press home their five-point demand.
Besides local people’s representative M A Latif MP, Lighterage Workers Union President Shah Alam including other senior port officials were present at the meeting.
