Chittagong Customs House has started the process of demolishing 188 containers of various types of auctionable goods that have been lying in Chittagong port for a long time. The list of products that will be demolished includes animal feed, onions, fish feed, Canadian canula, meat and bone meal, apples, maltas, mandarins, fish, a variety of cereals, and liquid drinks. Earlier this year, 298 containers of goods were demolished in the embankment area adjacent to the Bay Terminal at North Halishahar in Chattogram. However, this time a new place is being selected for the demolition of 188 containers of goods. The demolition activities will start after the coordination of the government departments related to the demolition.
Non-auctionable goods are a huge problem for the port. Customs house cannot demolish non-auctionable goods due to legal complications. As a result, handling activities at the port yard were disrupted for these containers.
Customs house authorities say, ‘In addition to the regular auction activities, we are also carrying out demolition activities. In the meantime, the commodity destruction committee has approved the demolition of 188 non-auctionable containers. Now we will start the demolition activities in coordination with the concerned government departments. Even as the COVID-19 situation deteriorated, customs demolished 298 containers. In continuation of this, we are resuming the demolition activities.’
