As a least developed country, Bangladesh enjoys duty-free and quota-free market facilities in many countries of the world, which will last till 2026. Bangladeshi diplomats and officials are in talks with various countries and alliances to continue these facilities. Finally, there have been some results of these discussions. Australia is the first country to make a definite commitment to continue providing duty-free and quota-free market facilities beyond 2026. The two countries have held several meetings at the ambassador and commerce secretary levels and as a result, that promise has been made.
In this regard, Md. Sufiur Rahman, the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Australia said, ‘There were two important meetings in February. The first meeting I had was with Dan Tehan, Australia’s Minister of Commerce. The second meeting was between the trade secretaries.’
‘We have been able to convince Australians that the ongoing trade between the two countries will continue to grow in the days ahead, which will be a win-win situation,’ he said.
It is to be noted that in 2026, Bangladesh will officially become a middle-income country and after that time, if there are no arrangements, Bangladesh will not be able to get duty-free benefits.
