European Union (EU) Ambassador Charles Whiteley said that Bangladesh has already been promoted from a less developed country to a developing country. The next 10 years will be challenging for Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s readymade garments industry market needs to maintain its streak of success. He also mentioned that the EU is willing to increase investment in Bangladesh. In addition, he said that the EU wants to increase its political involvement in Bangladesh in the next 10 years.
The first event of the ‘Meet the Ambassador’ series jointly organised by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Bangladesh (FES, Bangladesh) began on Saturday (16 July) at a hotel in the capital. Whiteley said this at the event.
In response to a question about the Russia-Ukraine issue, he said that the EU is adopting a diplomatic approach to the Russia-Ukraine issue. The EU does not want another war to spread to Europe. Bangladesh can play a major role in maintaining geopolitical stability in South Asia. At the same time, China has also become a superpower in the world. Despite ideological differences on some issues, the EU will maintain good relations with China.
Whiteley said that they are most interested in the infrastructure construction industry of Bangladesh. He said that the youth of Bangladesh has immense potential, and they want to utilise it. The EU wants to increase the amount of training in the technology sector in Bangladesh to increase professional skills.
