Japan will lend USD 2.7 billion to Bangladesh

To aid the economy of Bangladesh in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan is providing USD 2.67 billion in loan support for budgeting assistance and various megaprojects. Earlier this week, a loan agreement was signed between the two countries in Economic Relations Division.

The finance ministry said in a press release that an exchange note and loan agreement have been signed for two investment projects and one budget support loan. Secretary of Economic Relations Division Fatima Yasmin signed an exchange note with the Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki, and signed a loan agreement with JICA Office Chief Representative in Bangladesh Mr Yuho Hayakawa. Finance Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal was virtually present at the meeting.

At the time, the Finance Minister said, “Japan has responded very quickly and positively to the call for budgeting assistance at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The Finance Minister thanked the Government of Japan for its involvement in several iconic mega projects including Bangabandhu Road and Jamuna Railway Bridge, Dhaka City Metro Rail Network, Third Terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Matarbari Power Plant and Matarbari Deep Seaport.
